Dec. 13 | Evening Forecast with Meteorologist Drew Narsutis
TONIGHT
Snow remains likely this evening, heavy at times through early and mid-evening, then tapering to lighter snow and flurries before midnight as skies slow
ly start to break. Lows drop to around zero, with a north-northwest wind around 10 mph and gusts up to 20 mph driving wind chills as low as 15 below. By the time it ends, much of central Indiana, including Indianapolis, will have storm totals near 4 to 6 inches with locally higher bands and very slick, snow-covered roads.
TOMORROW
Bright but brutally cold, with sunshine and a deep snowpack holding highs near 10, a west northwest wind around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.
Wind chills tumble to 15 to nearly 20 below zero early, and even in the afternoon it will feel well below zero at times, so limit time outside and cover exposed skin for church, shoveling, and errands. An extreme cold warning is in effect for much of central Indiana through late morning.
TOMORROW NIGHT
Mostly clear and still bitter, lows around zero to a couple degrees below, a west-northwest wind easing to around 5 mph and becoming light and variable overnight. Wind chills dip back into the 10 below range in the coldest pockets, and with clear sky over fresh snow temperatures fall quickly after sunset, so protect pets and let faucets drip if you have vulnerable pipes.
MONDAY
Mostly sunny and not quite as harsh, highs recovering into the low to mid 20s, a south wind around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. We start frigid in the morning, then afternoon sun and a south breeze help begin a slow thaw, with some melting on treated roads and darker surfaces while shaded and side streets stay icy.
MONDAY NIGHT
Partly cloudy and cold, lows in the mid to upper teens, a southwest wind around 5 mph. It is a quieter night with less extreme wind chills, but another solid freeze keeps any daytime melt refreezing into slick patches by daybreak.
TUESDAY
Mostly sunny and milder, highs in the mid 30s, a south wind around 5 to 10 mph. This is the first day that really feels different, with more noticeable melting on roads, driveways, and sidewalks, although snow piles linger and it still feels chilly if you are out for long.
TUESDAY NIGHT
Partly cloudy and noticeably less harsh, lows in the low 30s, a southwest wind around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Temperatures stay above freezing for many neighborhoods, so roads stay mainly wet as clouds increase ahead of the next system.
WEDNESDAY
Partly to mostly sunny and seasonably cool, highs in the low 40s, a southwest breeze around 5 to 10 mph. It feels much more manageable with mainly dry roads and continued melting, a good day for cleanup from the storm and to chip away at the snowpack.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Clouds thicken with a chance for rain after midnight, lows in the mid 30s, a south wind around 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Any showers that develop arrive as plain rain, setting up a wet start to Thursday and adding to the slushy, melting snowpack.
7 DAY FORECAST
Central Indiana moves from tonight’s significant winter storm and dangerous cold into a gradual midweek thaw. Heavy snow today and this evening gives way to extreme wind chills late tonight and Sunday, with readings of 15 to 25 below zero at times and highs Sunday stuck near 10. Temperatures moderate step by step next week, climbing into the 20s Monday, 30s Tuesday, and low 40s Wednesday as south winds take over and high pressure slides east. By Wednesday night and Thursday, a stronger system brings rain and gusty winds, helping to chew away at the remaining snow but also creating slushy, wet conditions. Confidence is high in the bitter cold through Monday morning and the steady warming trend into midweek, and moderate in timing and amounts with the late week rain system.
