RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Fire Department is continuing to investigate after two people were killed in a fire on Saturday morning. According to a release from the department, crews were called to the 1100 block of North 22nd Street for a reported residential structure fire at 8:52 a.m. o n Dec. 13. Upon their arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions and immediately began fire suppression operations. Simultaneously, search-and-rescue efforts were launched, leading to crews finding a 70-year-old woman on the first floor. She pronounced dead at the scene. A 10-year-old boy was found on the second floor a short time later and was also pronounced dead. Richmond Police Department Chaplain Cruz Sherman told 8News the woman was the great-grandmother of the boy. He also said the boy was a student in a Henrico County Public Schools elementary school. According to authorities, the extent of his injuries are not available as of the time of this reporting. According to the release, the fire caused exposure damage to adjacent homes. "Fire crews will remain on scene for an extended period as operations continue," the release from Richmond Fire reads. "The incident remains under investigation."
