The following essay was submitted by Jane Comins and Olivia Martson of the Friends of Kensington Playground. Kensington Playground was alive with the sounds of children playing on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Friends of Kensington Playground’s 5th Annual Holiday Celebration. The new playground equipment had just opened to the public on Thursday, Dec. 4, and word quickly spread. Fortunately, the weather cooperated, turning partly sunny and relatively warm. The swings were occupied all afternoon, and at one point, the new playscape had eight children enjoying it! Everyone enjoyed hot chocolate, although there was a debate between marshmallows or whipped cream. There were many festive cookies to choose from — gingerbread, linzer, cookies with colorful sprinkles, and more. The oranges were also a hit. Kids had fun making ornaments for the holiday tree or to take home — glitter pine cones, snowmen, reindeer, shaped pipe cleaners, and more. Fun was had by all. Thank you to the Parks Department for providing the holiday tree. Special thanks to the City for the new playground, including Board of Alders President Tyisha Walker-Myers, Mayor Elicker, and Giovanni Zinn and Josh Price in the Engineering Department. Thank you to everyone who joined us for holiday cheer, and to all the volunteers anddonors who made this event possible. Happy Holidays!
