CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — A woman who helped form a nonprofit in 1988 to support parks and urban forest development in Carmel has been honored with a forest all her own. The Carmel Clay Board of Parks and Recreation on Tuesday agreed to rename the Central Park Woodlands to Susannah H. Dillon Wo ods in honor of Sue Dillon. The change will happen in June. The woods are north and south of Central Park Drive East, the road leading to the Monon Community Center that’s accessible by motor vehicle from Westfield Boulevard north of the East 111th Street roundabout. A release issued Thursday from the board said Dillon, a founding member of the nonprofit Citizens for Greenspace, played a pivotal role in establishing the Carmel Clay Parks Recreation department. The Clay Township Board in 1991 proposed the creation of Carmel Clay Parks Recreation, and Dillon was appointed to the first park board. She served from 1991 to 1994 and again from 1999 to 2010, holding positions as president and vice president during her tenure. Today, Carmel Clay Parks Recreation manages over 700 acres of parkland and offers recreational programs and services, including partnerships with Carmel Clay Schools. Michael Klitzing, director and CEO of the Carmel parks system, said in a statement in the release, “Few individuals have had a more profound impact on the Carmel Clay park system than Sue Dillon.” The Carmel Clay Board of Parks and Recreation on Dec. 9, 2025, agreed to rename the Central Park Woodlands to Susannah H.
