Indy Film Fest screens “Anna and the Apocalypse”
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indy Film Fest hopes to bring some holiday cheer to the big screen Thursday night during its screening of a movie that some filmmakers described as a zombie Christmas musical.
While it’s not quite a holiday classic
, the group behind the annual film festival is screening “Anna and the Apocalypse.” According to organizers, it’s the first time the movie is being show in Indianapolis.
The nonprofit is using the film to revive its Rock + Reel Film series, which screens movies about music.
“Anna and the Apocalypse,” released in 2018 and made by British filmmakers, follows a group of high schoolers getting ready for their Christmas musical. Then they find themselves having to fight and sing for their survival.
Jason Hoffman, artistic director of Indy Film Fest, said the movie has a little bit of everything for everyone “It speaks to the musical theater kid. It speaks to the zombie lover. It speaks to people who love all the high school tropes — even like a John Hughes sort of thing — but twisted into a more R-rated zombie way.”
The organization is hosting the screening at the White Rabbit Cabaret, 1116 Prospect St., in the Fountain Square neighborhood southeast of downtown Indianapolis. The White Rabbit Cabaret is a 21-and-older venue. Tickets go for $15 and can be purchased online. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the screening will start at 8 p.m.
Indy Film Fest has held other events at the entertainment venue in the past. The show will use stage lighting, fog machines and other effects to enhance the musical numbers during the movie.
Hoffman said they’re also roping in a handful of local performers, and they “might be creeping around the audience as their zombie selves. Be on the lookout for them to hopefully — not bite — but they might start lip syncing and dancing.”
The last Rock + Reel film screening was in 2020. According to Hoffman, the group plans to keep the series going in the spring as part of its mission to keep connecting with movie lovers outside of their annual festival.
