FATAL WESTSIDE CRASH INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A male died Thursday morning after a vehicle speeding down a west side street crashed into his pickup truck, police say. Online police reports show Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the intersection of North L ynhurst Drive and West Vermont Street around 8:10 a.m. to investigate an accident with injuries. That area is on the far west side, just north of Rockville Road and west of I-465. When IMPD officers arrived, they found two vehicles, a pickup truck and a black Mustang. A person inside of the truck, a male, died at the scene; IMPD says the driver of the black Mustang fled the scene on foot. The driver has not been located. PIO Tommy Thompson told media at the scene investigators believe the sedan “engaged in high-speed activity” with another vehicle when it hit the pickup truck. Thompson says there have been several accidents at this intersection, but community members have come forward with security footage and other evidence that has helped investigations and kept the area safe. Thompson also stressed accountability from people involved in reckless driving, especially as the weather worsens. “The temperatures are gonna drop below what the salt can touch, and we have to be responsible behind the wheel,” Thompson said. “High speeds in this weather, wet conditions that turn to ice, the black ice we’ve seen on the interstate – we’re all battling it, we have to do our part because it’s a privilege to get behind the wheel. Or lives will be lost.” Thompson added, “I cannot imagine how that family feels. A totally innocent person is lost due to someone’s negligence.” The other vehicle involved the “high-speed activity” was not at the scene. IMPD says Lynhurst Drive is closed between Rockville Road and 10th Street while crews investigate.
