It was definitely a windy Wednesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a fast moving frontal system raced through the area bringing rain showers along with the breezy conditions. Winds gusted 35 to 40 miles per hour at times early in the day along the edge of the front as temperatures took a tumble through the day with the boundary moving eastward. Highs for Wednesday were in the mid-40s early in the day before temperatures tumbled into the 30s behind the front. With winds staying brisk out of the west/northwest, wind chills were knocked down into the 20s as the chilly air set back up over the area. Lingering showers mixed with and changed to sleet as temperatures dropped off through the mid to late afternoon hours. With enough moisture lingering behind in the cold air, a few snow showers will be possible into early Thursday. There may be enough to coat the ground in a few spots here in the Bluegrass, but the more favored area for light accumulations will be into the highest elevations of Southeastern Kentucky, where a Winter Weather Advisory is out until 10 am Thursday morning. Areas above 1500 feet along the Kentucky/Virginia border could see a couple of inches, which is a pretty typical scenario. The rest of Thursday looks mostly cloudy and cold as winds finally relax a bit across the commonwealth. Afternoon highs will stay chilly with temperatures in the low to mid-30s. The parade of clipper systems will kick in beginning Thursday night with the first one drawing close enough to lay down some light accumulations of snow across the northern half of Kentucky and stretching into the eastern mountains heading into Friday morning. Right now it looks like a 1″-2″ snow will be possible with higher amounts up toward Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky but the exact track will determine that. It’s another case of an overnight arrival that will create possible travel headaches for the morning commute so that’s something to keep in mind. With a southwest wind nosing some warmer air in (relatively speaking), we could see a changeover to some rain as the system exits with afternoon highs climbing back into the upper 30s and low 40s so the majority of the daylight hours Friday should be better. We’ll start the weekend dry on Saturday with the typical cloudy and cold scenario as more chilly air settles in with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 30s. The next clipper looks to arrive Saturday night and into early Sunday but much of the data has the deepest moisture just off to our north so it looks like the impacts at this point may be lower-end. However this system will be a more legitimate shot of cold air to the Ohio Valley for the second half of the weekend so if we do manage to get some light accumulations, it won’t be melting off into Sunday thanks to this bit of a cold blast. Temperatures may now struggle to even get out of the teens for highs on Sunday and a few spots could be looking at single digits lows for Monday morning. The good news is that this is a quick hitting cold snap as “milder” air will start to work back in pretty quickly with highs returning to the 40s by the middle of next week with some rain shower chances on the table.
