SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Apple unveiled its list Wednesday of the most downloaded apps of 2025. The list shows which apps were the most popular in the Apple App Store among iPhone users. Open AI's artificial intelligence chatbot app, ChatGPT, dominated all other free apps and topped the list at No. 1. The San Francisco-based AI company wrote that "ChatGPT consumer usage is largely about getting everyday tasks done. Three-quarters of conversations focus on practical guidance, seeking information, and writing. People value ChatGPT most as an advisor." Mountain View-headquartered Google earned the No. 3 spot for its main Google search app, which includes AI Overviews built in. Study: Chatbots may trigger ‘AI psychosis’ Another tech powerhouse based in Silicon Valley, Meta, had multiple social media apps in the top 10. Meta's Threads was the second-most downloaded free app, trailed by Meta's Instagram at No. 6. Interestingly, Facebook did not make the top 10, while TikTok ranked No. 4. The final four spots in the top 10 were taken by apps all controlled by Google: YouTube (No. 7), Google Maps (No. 8), Gmail (No. 9), and Google Gemini (No. 10). "The fact that ChatGPT is outpacing social networking standbys, and much-needed utilities like Google Maps, indicates how deeply AI has penetrated people’s everyday lives here in the U.S.," TechCrunch wrote.
