This is a curated list of D.C. area’s newly announced restaurant and bar closures, with new updates published every month. See a closing we missed? Drop us a line. Adams Morgan: Michelin-starred favorite Tail Up Goat will close on Saturday, December 20, after a nearly decade-long ru n. Chef Jon Sybert and his wife, Jill Tyler, debuted the Mediterranean-influenced spot in 2016, and went on to receive (and maintain) its star when the D.C. Michelin Guide was first announced in 2017. The same owners just revealed plans to retain the secluded real estate to turn it into a counter-service place that they say makes more sense in this economic climate. Look for a spring 2026 opening of Rye Bunny. Reserve a swan-song seat for Tail Up Goat’s $135-per-person prix fixe (or a la carte) menu online. 1827 Adams Mill Road Bethesda: Henry’s Sweet Retreat Bakery will close on Sunday, December 14, reports Bethesda Today. The popular candy shop and bakery, open since 2016 in Woodmont Triangle, serves ice cream, fudge, pies, cakes, and cookies, with walls of colorful jars filled with jelly beans, sour gummies, licorice, and edible Lego candies. Per the pub, its married co-owners, Patty and Tom Crave,r were “ready for a change,” and after a sale failed to go through this year, on top of a forthcoming rent spike, a closure was imminent. 4823 St. Elmo Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland Downtown: Nerds Nibblers, the counter-service daytime gem for breakfast, sandwiches, salads, and coffee, closed in early December after 15 years of business. 1451 L Street NW Foggy Bottom: After 11 years of feeding nearby George Washington University students, daytime cafe Poppabox has closed. The 24-seat cheese and accoutrements counter, located in the former Dio Wine Bar space, also served cheese plates, charcuterie, and wine pairings in a sit-down setting. “After deep and painful consideration, I’ve arrived at the decision to indefinitely suspend bar operations at the end of this year,” writes McGrath. Its stand at the Trinidad Market will keep running into early 2026 to work through its last inventory. Its last Trolley Club boxes will be picked up or delivered in the first week of January. 904 H Street NE H Street: Bullfrog Bagels announced its H Street closure at the end of November, though the team says a replacement location on the same Northeast strip is in the works (with “more details soon”).
