Police investigating report of camera found in bathroom at popular Carlsbad mall
Dec 08, 2025
A man says he spotted a camera, seemingly, recording him while he was in the bathroom at The Shoppes at Carlsbad mall on Saturday afternoon.
As AC used the bathroom, he took a video of the hidden camera that he says was pointed directly at the toilet. He says it was tucked into a space beneath a
diaper kit dispenser in a second-floor, unisex bathroom.
“I kind of felt bad too because like, prior to me, a couple of females went in there,” AC said.
While AC is uncomfortable about what may have been recorded, he says he’s more concerned about women and children who used the bathroom.
“Them being exposed online and just, I don’t know, I just kind of, like, grew up with, like, my mom, and I just respect women and stuff,” AC said.
The San Diego-area man says mall security responded quickly to his call and took the camera. He also called Carlsbad police to report the find as well.
In a statement, a police spokesperson told NBC 7 that the camera was collected as evidence, a detective was assigned to investigate and they’re reviewing the matter thoroughly.
It’s a disturbing discovery for shoppers like Rosina Boykin, who’s already concerned about privacy and safety in public bathrooms.
“Hopefully they find something, or maybe they can beef up some security measures,” Boykins said. “I try not to go to the bathroom in public.”
NBC 7 reached out to mall management to find out details about what they plan to do with security but are still waiting to hear back.
