12 people killed, 13 wounded in mass shooting in South Africa

Twelve people were killed and 13 others wounded in a mass shooting at an illegal bar Saturday in South Africa, authorities said.
The deceased victims included a 3-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, police said. The other victims were all adults.
Cops on Sunday were searching for
three male suspects.
Officials said the gunmen entered the bar, just west of Pretoria, and opened fire into the building.
“We are told that at least three unknown gunmen entered this hostel where a group of people were drinking and they started randomly shooting,” police spokesperson Brig. Athlenda Mathe told national broadcaster SABC.
While the shooting occurred around 4 a.m., police were not notified until nearly two hours later, according to Mathe. She said illegal, unlicensed bars, like the one where Saturday’s shooting occurred, are common throughout the nation and often the sites of violence.
South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with firearms as the number one killer, according to United Nations statistics. The country has also been the site of several mass shootings in recent years.
Last September, 18 people — including 15 women — were killed after seven men opened fire on two homes in a rural area near the country’s southeast corner. Cops found three AK-47-style rifles at the scene.
