The year 2010 was the year of the first iPad, the rise of social media and the Jets’ last playoff appearance. Gang Green was once again eliminated from postseason contention following its 34-10 loss on Sunday to Miami. The game was basically over after the Jets fell behind 21-0 with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter in a game they needed to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. “Get better, that’s how I process it,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “The only thing that we can do is improve and get better. Before you can start to consistently win, you have to improve in all areas. That includes us as coaches. We all have to improve. “If we want to consistently win in this league, we’ve got to get better.” The Jets were not expected to contend for a playoff spot in Glenn’s first season as coach. But they were out of the playoff hunt before the calendar hit Halloween. “It’s s–tty,” Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson said. “Nobody likes losing. I love the Jets and I want to do everything in my power to change this thing around. “We gotta dig deep and we figure out how to do this thing.” Gang Green began this season 0-7, and its offense and defense were both dreadful. It also didn’t help that their biggest offseason signing was a complete bust. The Jets signed Justin Fields, hoping he could be the next quarterback to turn around his career with a different team that drafted him after signing him to a two-year, $40 million contract in March. But all the Jets got in return was the worst passing attack in the NFL and a quarterback who refused to throw downfield. Fields led the Jets to just two wins this season before he was benched for Tyrod Taylor ahead of their loss to the Ravens in Week 12. In nine starts (2-7), Fields threw for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. However, Fields never displayed enough consistency to warrant him maintaining his starting spot, which is also what happened when he was the starting quarterback with the Bears and the Steelers. Fields’ play was so horrific, Jets owner Woody Johnson criticized him at the annual Fall League Meetings in Manhattan in October. Taylor started in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, but he injured his groin in the first quarter and did not return. Fields was unavailable after he was ruled out due to knee soreness, and the Jets had to turn to undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who was elevated from the practice squad, in a game in which the Dolphins led 21-0 in the first quarter. Cook’s play against the Dolphins only magnified how much the Jets need to find a franchise quarterback next offseason. He completed 14-of-30 passes for 163 yards and two interceptions. With the draft capital they accumulated after dealing both Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline, the Jets could draft a quarterback in next April’s draft. One thing is for sure, they need to find two quarterbacks, a possible future franchise quarterback and a veteran that could be a bridge to the rookie they may select in either 2026 or 2027. It is painfully evident that Fields is not the answer for the Jets. Taylor could be that bridge quarterback the Jets seek, but he has been snake-bitten by injuries throughout his career and hasn’t been able to prove he can stay on the field. Taylor will also be 37 next August. Until the Jets find a consistent answer at the quarterback position, it is hard to envision them breaking this playoff drought any time soon. “It’s a yearly thing, it definitely starts to weigh on you,” Jets running back Breece Hall said. “At the end of the day, you kind of look at yourself. “You see your peers and you see other guys that you know you’re just as good as or if not better than them and they just get to have a lot of fun. With AG here, I see the vision and I see how things are changing around. We just gotta be better as a team and go out and execute.” All the Jets issues shouldn’t just be placed on the offense. While they have played better lately, the Jets defense also deserves blame for their record this season. Earlier this season, the Jets defense looked outcoached at times. Players have missed tackles and been out of position, leaving opposing wide receivers open for several explosive plays downfield and that’s precisely what happened against the Dolphins. The Jets allowed a season-high 239 yards on the ground. In Week 2, the Bills finished with 224 rushing yards, which led Williams at the time to say that they, as a defense, “made a pact and that it won’t ever happen again.” Although Williams is now in Dallas, it did happen again, and too often the Jets defense has been sloppy. That is surprising, since they ranked in the top four in yards allowed in each of the past three seasons. “Obviously, as a player, you want to go as far as possible,” Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood said. “Each year, you want to progress. “But it is what it is. I’m going to come in to work ready to go and finish the season strong and I’m going to stick with my brothers at the end of the day.” ...read more read less
