RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With snowy weather hitting Central Virginia on Friday, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning Virginians that a refreeze is possible heading into Saturday morning. The evening of Friday, Dec. 5, VDOT said wet pavement could refreeze overnight. Drivers ar e urged to use caution, limit travel and watch out for possible icing on roadways that appear wet or damp. As needed, VDOT crews and contractors will monitor and treat roads. The department said a refreeze of wet or untreated roads is possible and could cause difficult travel conditions, though most interstates and busy roads are expected to remain clear. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra room for road crews to work and use additional caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which are most likely to become slippery first. Ahead of the first snow of the season, VDOT asked Virginians to stay off the roads on Friday due to snow, freezing rain and ice, which would make driving hazardous. In just over half a day, Virginia State Police reported 214 crashes across the state, with 29 resulting in injuries. Police said 73 took place in the span of just four hours. ...read more read less
