RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As cold weather settles into Central Virginia, travel by both air and road is being disrupted, and officials are urging people to use caution. At Richmond International Airport, a few flights were canceled on Friday, Dec. 5, and dozens more were delayed following the seaso n’s first snowfall. "They keep delaying me, so I'm hoping I don't miss my connecting flight," said Karen Gross, who was headed to Las Vegas. "So I'm a little nervous right now." Gross said her flight was pushed back twice, and she is far from alone. More than 50 flights scheduled to depart Richmond on Friday experienced similar delays. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) senior communications specialist Sara Shepherd said crews and contractors prepared for icy conditions and are monitoring roadways closely. "We’re preparing for icy road conditions," Shepherd said. "It is a hazardous condition. You lose traction between the road and your tires, that increases the possibility for crashes." Virginia State Police reported more than 200 crashes across the Commonwealth on Friday. VDOT said drivers should avoid the roads if possible. "Everybody should slow down if it’s essential travel," Shepherd said. "Take your time and add more time to your route so you’re not rushing or speeding."
