Botched robbery ends with woman killed INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A wreath of white flowers stands outside Josephine’s in Irvington for the woman shot and killed in what police describe as a “botched robbery.” The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) says 58-year-old Terry Mo rgan shot and killed 68-year old Terri Lee Heady during an attempted robbery Thursday night at Josephine’s in Irvington, an east side women’s clothing store where Heady worked.  On social media, business owners said Josephine’s and Black Sheep Irvington will remain closed for the foreseeable future.  “Our hearts are heavy with sadness. We extend our deepest condolences to Terri’s family and all those who were touched by her kindness and warmth,” the business posted. “We urge everyone to keep Terri’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Her vibrant spirit will forever remain in our hearts, and her absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew her.” Officers tracked Morgan down immediately after the shooting, about a block away from Josephine’s. Police say Morgan was armed, and after a brief standoff, Morgan shot himself. He later died at the hospital.  “The community of Irvington is one of the tightest communities that we have on the east side of Indianapolis and the city of Indianapolis,” IMPD East District Commander Mike Leeper said. “This is devastating and will be a hard hit to this community.”  The wreath placed outside the store in Heady’s memory came from George Thomas Florist, which sits just across East Washington Street.  “I don’t really know what to say. I’m kind of in shock that it happened right here,” George Thomas Florist Vice President Sam Smith said. He didn’t know Heady personally, but knows the owners of Josephine’s. “Shocking. Senseless. Doesn’t happen around here.” Next door, at The Bareknuckles Barbershop, manicurist Crissy Caban said she recently shopped at Josephine’s and had met Heady as a customer. “A very, very sweet woman,” Caban said. “And grew wings too soon.”  Caban doesn’t consider the neighborhood dangerous, but has felt a growing sense of caution living and working in Irvington in recent years. “It doesn’t feel as safe as when I moved in,” Caban said.  In a statement sent overnight, Indianapolis City-County Councilor Andy Nielsen (D) said he’s in communication with police as they investigate the shooting.  “Irvington is a resilient, strong, and tight-knit community, and tonight, we are mourning this senseless tragedy together,” Nielsen said. “I ask that in this moment, we do as we always do, look out for one another and all our neighbors.” Some businesses in Irvington plan to collect donations for Heady’s family during the annual Irvington Holiday Open House on Friday night, and they will hold a moment of silence. Smash’d Midwest Burgers is welcoming people to “Dine to Donate” on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Smash’d says it will donate 50% of sales to those affected by Heady’s death during the “Dine to Donate” event from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. (Provided Photo/The Black Hat Society of Historic Irvington via Facebook) ...read more read less
