A police officer in Westchester County has been placed on administrative leave as authorities investigate allegations of excessive force, based on a video that has been circulating on social media. According to a statement from the city manager of Peekskill, officers responded to a complaint abou t someone at the gazebo in Riverfront Green Park on Wednesday. Cellphone video obtained by News 12 that captures part of the arrest has raised questions about the officer’s conduct, the city said, adding the officer is on leave pending an administrative review. It’s unclear if that leave is paid or unpaid. It wasn’t immediately clear early Friday what led up to the moments captured on camera. Video shows the officer appearing to punch and kick the man and shocking him with a stun gun before more officers arrive. The city, though, acknowledges the video has sparked concern. “The video is troubling and raises serious questions about what transpired—specifically regarding the officer’s conduct and use of force,” the city of Peekskill’s statement said, in part. “This incident is under active investigation to determine all relevant facts and circumstances.” “The City of Peekskill and its Police Department recognize that this event has the potential to damage community trust,” the statement continued. “It is important to examine all factors surrounding this incident, including those not visible in the video, to fully understand the actions of both the officer and the individual involved.” The city said it is cooperating in the investigation. Any pertinent material has been forwarded to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office for an independent investigation.
