A Jewish woman’s home in La Jolla was vandalized, and San Diego police are investigating it as a possible hate crime. Someone spray painted a swastika on a flag bearing the image of President Donald Trump on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The incident was caught on a security camera. Nestle d in one of San Diego’s most affluent neighborhoods are manicured yards and large luxury homes — not exactly the place you might expect to find a tagger. “Especially this type of vandalism. It’s just disgusting,” homeowner Stacey Silk said. The doorbell camera video shows a man spray painting Silk’s flag. On closure examination, Silk saw a swastika and a toothbrush mustache. “I think someone was trying to send a message, and that kind of freaked me out a little bit,” Silk said. Silk is Jewish and is particularly sensitive to such images. She is also a fierce supporter of Trump. The flag shows him raising a fist after the attempted assassination last July. “For me, this isn’t political. It’s about someone vandalizing my home, so I didn’t expect what I saw,” Silk said. This is the eighth flag Silk and her family displayed on their back fence since Trump has been in office. Seven times before, they were stolen. Some had images of the president, while others were the American flag. “I was shocked to be honest with you,” Silk said. Investigators are just as interested in those incidents, even though Silk did not report them.  “There has never been anything hateful and anything hateful or vile,” Silk said. That is until now, which is why Silk reported it to police. She says they are investigating it as a possible hate crime. “I would say it is someone who lives close by because he clearly walked up,” Silk said. The zip ties that supported the flag remain. Silk is delaying another such display and keeping an eye out for him until police finish their investigation. “A gentleman drove by and said, ‘Put your flag back up,'” Silk said. “So I have a lot of support out there, too, so we’ll see.” Police tell Silk that even though she doesn’t want to prosecute, they want the videos of prior incidents to document for their investigation. ...read more read less
