NEWBERRY CO., S.C. (WOLO) – Newberry County deputies say a man who barricaded himself armed with a sword overnight is now in custody. Deputies say after 6 a.m., they responded to College Street near Whitener Road after he made numerous calls to 911 alleging felony crimes. He later called stating he was going to commit suicide. Deputies say they found the person barricaded in an abandoned travel trailer and armed with a ninja type sword. The Sheriff’s Critical Incident Response Team responded along with law enforcement from the County and City. According to investigators, a deputy established rapport with the individual and was able to de-escalate the situation. He was taken into custody and taken to Newberry Health by Newberry County EMS for evaluation.
